RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels down to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
