The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he admitted that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.
Matteo's Unforeseen Return
One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to weaken their team without replacements.
He joined initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
